IAVCEI Volcandpark 2026

Volcandpark 2026

An international conference hosted by the IAVCEI Commission on Volcanic Geoheritage and Protected Volcanic Landscapes

event dates

26 - 29 May 2026

Sopron, HU

Travel Grants available

17 December, 2025

The conference will address the management and preservation of volcanic geoheritage, the role of geoparks, and the communication of volcanic processes to society. This edition introduces the concept of “Deep-Earth Geoheritage,” emphasizing volcanic rocks that contain xenoliths— natural archives revealing the lithosphere’s properties and evolution. This theme bridges deepEarth processes with surface expressions and sedimentological records in volcanic terrains. The scientific program features two days of oral and poster sessions and two field days. The intra-conference excursion will visit the Little Hungarian Plain Volcanic Field (Ság Hill, Somló, Kemenes Volcano House), highlighting monogenetic volcanic structures, pyroclastic and effusive deposits, and their sedimentary reworking. The post-conference field trip explores the Bakony–Balaton UNESCO Global Geopark, showcasing inverted volcanic landscapes, basaltic plateau remnants, and sedimentary–volcanic interactions that illuminate the long-term evolution of the Pannonian Basin.

For IAS members, and particularly students, Volcandpark 2026 provides a unique opportunity to engage with the sedimentological and volcanological aspects of terrestrial and lacustrine environments—such as volcaniclastic facies, pyroclastic density current deposits, and basinscale sedimentation linked to volcanic activity. The meeting’s field-based approach encourages interdisciplinary collaboration and professional growth within both the volcanological and sedimentological communities.

IAS Student Travel grants are available. The closing date is 31st March 2026. Please see the guidelines here and apply via your IAS member dashboard.
