A TRULY INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY

The International Association of Sedimentologists (IAS) was founded at the International Geological Congress in Algiers on 11 September 1952, to promote the study of Sedimentology.

It has about 2000 members in about 100 countries. Its main activities are the publication of top quality content, organisation and sponsoring of conferences and financially assisting sedimentologists through a system of grants.

TOP QUALITY SCIENTIFIC PUBLICATIONS
FOR SEDIMENTOLOGISTS

The IAS is the home of three outstanding journals: Sedimentology (leader in its field), The Depositional Record (Open Access) and Basin Research (together with EAGE). The association is also partner in the publication of Journal of Petroleum Geology.

Besides journals, the IAS from time to time publishes Special Publications, thematic books edited by specialists.

HIGHLY ANTICIPATED IAS CONFERENCES

International Sedimentological Congresses (ISC) are held every four years. Regional and Thematic Meetings (International Meetings of Sedimentology, Summer Schools, Lecture Tours) are held between ISC's. The IAS does not organise these conferences by itself, but acts as a sponsor.

In addition, the IAS also supports selected non-IAS conferences.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR SEDIMENTOLOGISTS

To promote the study and research of sedimentology, the IAS offers PhD students in the field of sedimentology 2 types of grants: postgraduate research grants and travel grants. Early-career post-doctoral researchers can apply for a post-doctoral research grant, while sedimentology researchers in least developed countries can apply for an institutional grants.

A special note on sedimentology in China

The connection of Chinese sedimentologists with the international sedimentological community only began in the late 1970s. With the rapidly increasing visibility of Chinese researchers and the vast geological heritage found in China, much collaboration is now taking place between Chinese and international sedimentologists.
